What is Trauma

Trauma ranges from mild to high. This may be any experience that was disturbing, shocking or terrifying, which could not be processed at the time.

When a trauma occurs – it triggers the ‘fight and flight’ response. This response represses trauma and  protects the person from its disturbing content.

Are there many forms of trauma?

In my practice of many years, clients have shown me that there are at least three types of trauma:

  1. Personal trauma from situations in daily life. (e.g. Bullying. Alienation. Racism. Abuse. Emotional. Psychological. Physical DV/sexual assault. War.)
  2. Relational trauma from formative years and poor relational bonding.
  3. Generational disturbances and trauma.

Where is Trauma Held?

Neural pathways of the brain, mind and body holds the trauma. This trauma may be triggered into trauma symptoms on a regular basis or infrequently. It could occur daily or not occur for years.

What to consider in seeking a practitioner for Trauma-Informed Treatment for Therapy and Effectiveness

Picking the right therapist and approach is crucial in assisting in resolving your issue whether it is Trauma or PTSD.  Your needing in putting the issue behind you and start living instead of managing your symptoms.

For trauma-informed treatment effectiveness

You would be more likely to be accepting of treatment if the therapist is aware of how to deal with someone with trauma – not only theoretically but  practically as well. The proof is in how you feel after a session.

Confidence with the therapist resulting in:

  • the outcome is better
  • better engagement and involvement by you
  • better adherence to treatment
  • a feeling of Empowerment
  • Trust in the therapist

Trauma informed therapy involves creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals can process their experiences, emotions, and thoughts related to trauma without re-traumatisation. It aims to promote healing, resilience, and empowerment by addressing the impact of trauma on an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

How do you find a good trauma informed treatment therapist

You may ask them questions like:

  • Do they believe Trauma/PtSD can be overcome?
  • Does the therapist believe in resolving the issue or managing it?
  • Has the therapist had Trauma-Informed Treatment training?
  • How many sessions do you need to have??ORls?
  • Therapist reccomending medication?
  • Are they asking you to retell your story of what happened?
  • Is the therapist using latest knowledge in neuroscience that the brain can heal under appropriate conditions. Techniques and processing that Psychiatrist Norman Doidge shares in his book

  • etc

Trauma informed therapy is an approach to mental health treatment that recognizes the prevalence and impact of traumatic experiences on individuals. This Trauma can include physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, disasters, and other types of events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope.

Trauma informed therapy should not re-traumatise you.

Can you overcome your Trauma and start living a Full Life

Until recently the thinking was that the brain could not heal. Recent studies in Neuroscience has shown that the brain is constantly rewiring itself. The brain can self-heal under appropriate circumstances and quickly. Regardless of whether your trauma was acquired a long time ago or recently. This type of therapy typically involves a collaborative and personalized approach that recognizes the individual’s unique needs and goals. Therapists use techniques, such as Family Constellations, Emotional Mind Integration and Rapid Core Healing. The idea is not to manage symptoms but to resolve them.

With traditional therapies such as:

  • cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • eye movement desensitization
  • reprocessing (EMDR)
  • mindfulness

With these traditional approaches you need to:

  • develop coping strategies
  • manage symptoms
  • build resiliency

Plus you may need to have:

  • group therapy
  • peer support

Plus complementary therapies like:

  • yoga
  • acupuncture

The above are traditional ways of dealing with trauma and these could take a long time.

There is a new approach to trauma informed treatment!

Yildiz Sethi’s Master Counselling, B.Ed. is to try to resolve the issue rather than build techniques in managing the issue and coping strategies.

With Yildiz’s approach – issues can be resolved in 3 to 5 sessions.

About Trauma informed Therapy

Overall, the goal of trauma-informed therapy is to promote healing, resilience, and empowerment for individuals who have experienced trauma. It recognizes that trauma can have a significant impact on an individual’s mental and physical well-being, and provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to address the impact of trauma on their lives. It is possible to get past the issue and move on reasonably quickly with new techniques.
