Business Constellations
We may like to think that business is about elements such as goals, structure, application and efficiency. And of course finance.
This is true; however businesses are an extension of us, in that they are created through our intentions and desires.
I discuss a case here where I have altered some facts to maintain confidentiality.
A man who I call John came to me in frustration about the poor productivity of his ten year business. He had been receiving coaching consistently and often attended personal development seminars aimed to assist leaders in their growth and development. He said that after such meetings and coaching he often felt really positive and motivated and actively put into place what he perceived was required as the next step towards growth in his field.
John said he had reached a point where he had tried everything to break through the blocks he felt were present in his business and yet he still felt blocked and the business was struggling.
We did a Business Constellation.
He set up the components of his business and immediately could see that he appeared to be on his own. The customers, products/services and his employees were looking away.
In feeling into his own place, he felt an intense sense of aloneness and fear in his body.
In looking at his family system, John saw his father a long way off and looking away. In a brief discussion he said his father was an orphan after a tragedy in the war.
After a series of processes whereby John was able to express his feelings of aloneness and fear to his father, emotions were expressed, healing senses were given and john had an image of his father reunited with his own parents, with them looking sad but kindly at John with great pride.
From here, John was able to look back at his place in his business and move into a more prominent place where he said he felt better. Further processing and movements were made until he finally took a deep breath and said ‘I’m in charge now,’ with a deep and soft smile.
We had another session a month later and a year on, he is operating a business that he says he is proud of. He has a picture of his father on his desk.
What does this mean for Businesses and careers?
They are driven by human energy where vision, drive and motivation are important and also the energy of complex family systems as well. Where subconscious generational entanglements, tragedies and injustices may also dwell along with love and resilience, forming patterns, blocks or sabotage patterns that inhibit in some way. Interestingly, we often can’t feel these in our awareness because we are born into them, so it feels like normal until we notice the difference once they have gone.
Why couldn’t coaching or psychotherapy be the answer here?
In working with this in coaching or therapy, John would be working with his conscious mind and personal feelings. This may well sort out some conscious thinking and behaviour and raise awareness and may have resulted in releasing some blocks. Leaving the systemic blocks intact as coaching and psychotherapies are not designed to work with systemic or generational patterns.
Business Constellations may look at business, organisations, career and relationships within the work or ambition arena. This involves problems such as bullying, the perceived ‘glass ceiling’ that may be experience, or not being seen or heard, to name only a few possibilities. Of course your being aware and in contact with your purpose and your relationship with money are all crucial components for success that are part of a Business Constellation.
From this example you may see that it’s impossible to work with Business Constellations without also have an intricate knowledge and experience of Family Constellations as they are intricately linked. Business Constellations is an advanced Constellation process that builds onto Family Constellations.
